I remember learning about the Incas in 4th grade, but not about the Maya civilization. And I had basically zero idea about their myths and legends. So The Storm Runner seemed like a good pick.
Zane has an actual volcano near his home, which he likes to explore with his dog Rosie. Even if hiking isn't easy, because one of his legs is shorter than the other. But things get a little more...interesting and complicated, when he meets a girl named Brooks in his new school, who wasn't even in the school records. So, does he get tangled in some mega Maya problems? One word- yes.
The story was very cool, and I didn't expect this particular book to cover all the things it did (I thought it would have a shorter plot, and all the solution will take place in the other books in the trilogy). But that was a nice surprise, and I am very excited to read the second and third book (the third book actually came out quite recently).
